Analytics Platform Consolidation

Consolidating multiple analytics platforms into a single Power BI environment

A large scale analytics modernization program that consolidated Tableau, MicroStrategy and Qlik into Power BI, reducing platform complexity, improving reporting consistency and creating a more efficient enterprise analytics operating model.

The Challenge

Multiple analytics platforms had created duplicated reporting, inconsistent metrics and a growing technology cost base.

The organization had Tableau, MicroStrategy and Qlik environments operating across business functions. Over time, similar reports and business logic had been built independently, making analytics harder to govern and more expensive to maintain.

What we found

  • More than 15,000 reports and dashboards across multiple analytics platforms.
  • Duplicate reports answering similar business questions in different tools.
  • Business calculations implemented differently across platforms.
  • Separate administration, licensing and support models for each platform.
  • Limited visibility into report usage and business criticality.
  • High effort required to make changes across multiple reporting environments.
  • Users depended on legacy reports even when equivalent information existed elsewhere.

What the business needed

  • A single enterprise analytics platform with clear standards.
  • A fact based decision on which reports should migrate, consolidate or retire.
  • Reusable semantic models to reduce duplicated business logic.
  • Consistent definitions for enterprise metrics and KPIs.
  • A controlled migration path with minimal business disruption.
  • Lower platform and support costs.
  • A sustainable governance model for future reporting.
Our Solution

We built an analytics consolidation program around usage, business value, complexity and cost.

The objective was not to move every report into Power BI. Reports were assessed and rationalized first so the organization migrated only what was required and redesigned reporting where consolidation could remove duplication.

Multi platform to Power BI consolidation approach

The team established an analytics migration factory covering inventory, rationalization, semantic model design, report conversion, validation and platform retirement.

  • Inventoried reports, dashboards, data sources, users, refresh schedules and ownership across Tableau, MicroStrategy and Qlik.
  • Analyzed usage to identify active, low usage, duplicate and obsolete reporting assets.
  • Mapped reports to business capabilities and identified opportunities to combine similar dashboards.
  • Created common Power BI semantic models and reusable measures for enterprise KPIs.
  • Converted high value reports using standardized Power BI design and development patterns.
  • Validated report numbers against source platforms before business acceptance.
  • Retired redundant reports and progressively decommissioned legacy analytics platforms.
Platform and asset discoveryBuilt a complete view of reports, dashboards, data sources, owners, users, refreshes and platform dependencies.
Report rationalizationClassified reports into migrate, consolidate, redesign, archive and retire categories based on usage and business value.
Power BI target designDefined semantic models, workspace structures, security patterns, report standards and reusable KPI definitions.
Migration and retirementMigrated reports in waves, validated outputs and retired redundant assets and legacy platform capacity.
Technology Architecture

A common Power BI analytics layer replaced fragmented reporting environments

The target model separated governed data and semantic logic from report presentation, allowing multiple business teams to consume consistent metrics through a common platform.

Migration Methodology

A six stage analytics consolidation factory designed to reduce both report sprawl and platform cost

Migration waves were prioritized by business criticality, report usage, complexity, duplication and platform retirement potential.

01

Discover

Inventory reports, dashboards, users, data sources, schedules and platform costs.

02

Assess

Score reports by usage, business value, complexity, duplication and migration readiness.

03

Rationalize

Combine overlapping reports and retire assets that no longer provide business value.

04

Modernize

Build reusable Power BI semantic models and convert priority reporting workloads.

05

Validate

Reconcile metrics, calculations, filters and report outputs with business users.

06

Decommission

Retire redundant reports and progressively reduce legacy platform licenses and support.

Measured Results

The consolidation reduced platform complexity and reporting duplication while improving the economics of analytics.

15,000+

Reports assessed

Enterprise reporting assets across Tableau, MicroStrategy and Qlik were inventoried and evaluated.

38%

Lower analytics platform cost

Platform consolidation and retirement of redundant environments reduced licensing and operating costs.

42%

Fewer duplicate reports

Overlapping dashboards were consolidated around common business questions and semantic models.

30%

Faster report delivery

Reusable Power BI patterns reduced development and validation effort for new reporting.

25%

Lower report support effort

Standardized models and fewer platforms reduced the effort required to maintain reporting.

20%

Improved active report adoption

Rationalization focused users on trusted and actively maintained reporting assets.

Business Impact

The organization moved from fragmented analytics platforms to a governed enterprise Power BI operating model.

The program created a simpler analytics landscape with fewer platforms, fewer duplicate reports and a common approach to enterprise metrics.

Lower Analytics Cost

Reducing platform overlap lowered licensing, administration and support costs while simplifying vendor management.

Consistent Business Metrics

Reusable semantic models and governed measures reduced differences in KPI calculations across business functions.

Simpler User Experience

Users gained a common analytics environment instead of navigating multiple reporting platforms for similar information.

Stronger Analytics Governance

Standard workspaces, ownership, security, certification and lifecycle management created clearer control over enterprise reporting.

The consolidation focused on reducing the number of reports and platforms the organization had to manage, not simply recreating the existing reporting estate in Power BI.
Analytics Platform Consolidation

Build a simpler and more efficient enterprise analytics environment.

From platform discovery and report rationalization to Power BI migration, semantic model design, validation and legacy platform retirement, a structured consolidation program can reduce analytics cost and complexity.
